Lifestyle: Your Guide to Slow Eating

I believe "slow eating" is synonymous with respecting food, the quality of the ingredients and especially of the time spent preparing meals. Being disgusted by the United States' agricultural industry, I've been vegetarian for a couple of years, with exceptions of circumstances. Regardless of your diet, relationship with food etc. everyone can "slow eat."

The key to "slow eating" is the importance you give to eating. I never skip breakfast, as I was saying here. I also don't eat it in the car or while walking. I take the time to make my oatmeal, my piece of toast or another breakfast food and sit down to eat it. It's important to appreciate food and you do this by being in the moment. One doesn't ingest food but savors it. It's a gustative experience (if done right), esthetic and also social. Below are the three pillars of "slow eating" according to me.

Color
If your dish is colorful and beautiful, it'll be balanced and appetizing. There should be at least three colors on your plate. For example, the green from green beans, the brown from rice and the white from tofu or red from meat. By remembering to eat colorfully, a balanced diet will settle in easily.

Variety
A varied diet is a healthy one. It isn't suggested to eat the same thing daily, even if it's a big salad. Varying your food intake makes it possible to obtain the nutritional values of different products in different ways. In addition, trying out a new dish every day is much more interesting than eating out of habit.

Pleasure
Lastly, it's important that you feel pleasure while eating. Cook your favorite dishes, invite friends to eat at home, buy new ingredients that are unfamiliar to you etc!

Lifestyle: Slow Living at Home Rituals

The snow storm that just hit the East Coast of the United States couldn't have happened on a better day (trying to stay positive). I had planned to write this post on my at home rituals and here I was, physically stuck inside while snow was continuously falling. Perfect timing.

Timing parfait.

You shouldn't change something that works well for you which is why I never skip breakfast. I don't understand people who aren't hungy in the morning. I need energy to kickstart my day. It's out of the question to skip breakfast at college after crew practice! But neither is it acceptable at home either! I'll make myself some oatmeal or a slice of toast and a great coffee. I'll often add eggs to fill me up if I had practice.

Reading and hygge
I try to get in touch with the sweetness of summer, vacation and infinite time by reading for an hour or two. I'll download a new book onto my Kindle, read my favorite blogs or even the news. Cozying up in a blanket and putting your phone away in the next room are the most important things to get lost in your reading.

Silence
I meditate every morning for five short minutes before starting my day. Since I've started this habit, I've begun to reap its benefits. When I have more time, I like to meditate for 10 to 15 minutes. If you don't like this practice, you can also journal or draw in a silent enviornment to give yourself space to think.

Silence

Slow eating
I invited a friend over for lunch yesterday. I cooked for the two of us and we peacefully ate while chatting about everything and anything. Real luxury is not rushing yourself. In addition, there's nothing better than preparing yourself a quality cup of tea in a pretty mug and taking the time to savor it.

Lifestyle: "Slow Living" Well-Being

Slow living is essential to live a balanced life. Learn more in this article.

We're going to end the "slow living" series by talking about well-being. You learned in the first article that you can adopt all slow-living techniques and apply them to your day-to-day life. In the second article, you learned that it's crucial to take your time exploring the city and living like the locals.

It's important to give yourself some "me time" no matter how busy or stressed you are. Sleep at least 7 to 8 hours per week. If your schedule allows it, take your time in the morning. Plan out a feasible morning routine keeping your schedule in mind. Read a newspaper or magazine article, cook up a nice meal or eat with your family. Choose a hobby or an activity that makes you happy and do it every two days.

** Your third #PMOFslowlifechallengechoose a habit from this article and incorporate it into your daily life. Next week, pick another habit and keep doing so until you've created an adequate morning routine.

Lifestyle: "Slow Living" Travel

Your Guide to SLOW LIVING while traveling #lifestyle

I am not one to travel to three European cities in three days. You probably read my last article on "slow living." Well, I think it's as important to take your time while traveling as in day-to-day life.

Your Guide to SLOW LIVING while traveling #lifestyle

Even on the other side of the planet, you can apply the "slow living" concept: if you don't do it today, you can take care of it tomorrow. You shouldn't travel too fast. A short week here and there isn't enough. My family doesn't try to visit each historical site when we travel. We're lucky to be able to travel during the summer since my parents are both teachers.

Your Guide to SLOW LIVING while traveling #lifestyle

Let's take our trip to Istanbul, Turkey, for example. We went to the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace but we didn't visit the Hagia Sophia. You need to slow down to lead a better life. We'd stroll through the markets, explore small streets (sometimes a bit too far away from town) and ate local cuisine. You should take you time to get acquainted with the city. We took a ferry to Istanbul's Asian side, learned how to order coffee in Turkish and walked to touch the Bosphorus.

Lifestyle: "Slow Living"

Adopt the Slow Living Lifestyle: the concept of carpe diem

I recently read an article about "slow living" which made me do some thinking. I'll be moving into my college dorm in a couple of days, leaving my friends, family and the comfort of my own home behind. In my new agenda, I immediately started planning hang outs with friends and some time with my family. I realized that instead of planning everything out, I should take my time and appreciate my life as well as time spent with my friends and family.

The concept of "slow living" is simple: if you don't do it today, you can take care of it tomorrow. Of course, there are certain exceptions. However, for your day-to-day life, it's easy to make some adjustments and start "slow living."

Adopt the Slow Living Lifestyle: the concept of carpe diem

This first "slow living" article is about habits. My first instinct, when I learned how little time I had left, was to organize all my days and not forget anyone in the process. Yes, I had a lovely week filled with friends and unforgettable memories but I was beyond exhausted by the end of it and needed some alone time. It's important to have some free days, not plan anything and choose to do things spontaneously. By doing this, I was more present with my friends. Living in the moment is the antidote to burnout and facilitates creativity. Carpe Diem: live in the moment and take your time.

** Your first #PMOFslowlifechallenge: don't fill up your agenda. Take time to read magazines, watch a show, cook etc.

Check back in a week for the second #PMOFslowlifechallengeUse the #PMOFslowlifechallenge on Instagram so I can see your progress and what you're up to!

What do you think?
