The Normcore Debate

I don't understand the "normcore" trend. Why is it called normcore and not "casual"? When I wear jeans and a crop top, I don't call my outfit normcore but instead, "a casual outfit". The fact that the normcore trend has been commercialized upsets me. In the beginning, the idea behind dressing normcore was to start fresh. It was an attempt to restore normality into one's outfit by wearing basics and rediscovering casual fashion. However, this idea has been "bought" by brands with the intention of making profit in selling basic clothing. If we buy clothes to look basic or normal, it defeats the purpose of the orignial normcore trend. Personally, I feel that to dress normcore, you simply need to sift through your clothes and pick out an outfit that for you, not for stores, is normcore because each individual has a different perception of what is basic or not for them.

  1. I just chuckle when I see brands trying to commercialise normcore - if someone wants to buy into it they're more than welcome to, but it's all a little too "try hard" for me! x Rebecca - itscohen.co.uk

    1. Yes, exactly right. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and if they want to buy into normcore, instead of doing it themselves, so be it.

    1. Ah exactly right but I'm just frustrated that everything has to be monetized these days. Even simplicity.

  16. Yes, you're quite right. Coining the term "normcore" is clearly a marketing strategy when in reality, we're talking about wardrobe staples, not everyday basics, rather everyday essentials :) and by the way, I adore your coat. Such a plush colour. And those shoes. Beautiful details.
