5 Questions with ~ Tania

Meet Tania, from the blog Fresh Fizzle. Read her interview below.

1) I remember begging my mom for a pink pair of pants at a local department store.  They weren't actually bejeweled but had a print of jewels and pearls on them.  I think they were Oshkosh B'Gosh.  I didn't end up getting them but for some reason the memory of wanting them so badly stuck with me.  We didn't have a lot of money growing up.  My mom was a seamstress and she would sew me clothes from leftover fabrics she had from her jobs.  So I would have different pieces of clothing in the same weird fabrics.  I also had a lot of hand-me-downs from my three older brothers.  So, it was a pretty sad childhood, fashion-wise.

1) Je me souviens d’avoir réclamé à ma mère un pantalon rose aux imprimés de bijoux et de sequins, de la marque Oshkosh B’Gosh. Elle ne me l'a pas acheté, mais je me souviens très bien de l'avoir convoité bien longtemps après. À l'époque, nous n’avions pas beaucoup d’argent. Ma mère était couturière, donc elle arrivait à me créer des vêtements en utilisant des chutes de tissus qu’elle rapportait de son travail. J’avais beaucoup d'habits à tissus bizarres. Mes trois grands frères me donnaient aussi leurs vêtements trop petits. Question mode, mon enfance était assez triste.

2) While I like athleisure a lot, I could never really get on board with "normcore."  I definitely have my blah days when I don't want to put any effort into my outfit, and that's where athleisure comes in, but purposely picking an outfit made up of boring pieces is counter-intuitive to me.  I tried out a few looks back when the trend was really big but never ended up shooting them for my blog because I felt they were too basic.  It was overtly trendy yet didn't communicate anything.  I also felt like it wasn't really in line with my aesthetic.  I don't think that the way I dress is super special or anything, but I do hope to convey some semblance of individuality through my clothing choices.

3) I have a two-year-old niece who is a very special little princess.  She is very adamant about what she wants to wear most days and I love that she has such a strong perspective even though I secretly cringe inside at some of her outfit choices.  She's all about clashing prints, pink and purple, layering a dress over some pants, throwing on a tutu and some rainboots or even mismatched shoes.  But she just does her, you know?  And you can tell by how she acts when she wears one of her more outlandish outfits that they make her feel like a million bucks.  I think we could all stand to throw our caution to the wind a bit, to not give a thought to what other people might think about what we are wearing, and just wear whatever makes our hearts happy.

2) En ce moment, j'aime beaucoup le style sport, mais je ne pourrais jamais aimer le style “normcore.” Évidemment, il y a des jours où je ne veux pas faire un effort vestimentaire. Ces jours-là, je porte des vêtements sportifs, mais je ne ferais pas exprès de m’habiller “normcore". J’avais déjà essayé cette mode, mais je me sentais toujours trop décontractée pour mettre les photos sur mon blog. Je trouve aussi que la mode “normcore” ne correspond pas à mon style. Ce qui compte c'est de m'habiller comme bon me semble et d'être fidèle à moi-même.

3) J’ai une nièce de deux ans qui se comporte comme une petite princesse. Elle est très têtue en ce qui concerne ses choix vestimentaires intéressants! Elle adore porter différents imprimés, du violet et du rose dans la même tenue, une robe avec un pantalon ou mettre des bottes de pluie avec un tutu. C’est son style et elle l'assume. Elle est aux anges quand elle porte une de ses tenues excentriques. Je pense que nous pouvons tous en tirer une leçon. On ne devrait pas ce soucier de ce que les autres personnes pensent de nous, mais simplement mettre ou faire ce qui nous fait plaisir. 

4) To tell you the truth I never pay much attention to Fashion Week and I find myself kind of wanting to avoid social media when it's going on.  It's not that I don't appreciate fashion as an art form but most of it is a bit too abstract for me.  I'm much more interested in how trends are translated onto the streets and what real people around the world are wearing.  But I guess if I could pick any Fashion Week to attend, it would probably be Paris.  It's always cool to know what the French are doing.

5) I haven't been out of the country in a while, but my last domestic trip was to Chicago which I did a couple of posts on on my blog.  I'll be going to Iceland this summer which has been on my bucket list for a while, so super excited about that!

4) À vrai dire, je ne fais pas très attention à la Fashion Week. J’évite aussi les réseaux sociaux pendant cette période. J’aime la mode en tant qu’art, mais NYFW ou PFW sont trop abstraites pour moi. Je suis beaucoup plus intéressée par les modes qui envahissent les rues que ce qui se passe sur les podiums. Si je devais aller à une Fashion Week, j’irais à celle de Paris. Je suis toujours curieuse de voir ce que les Français font. 

5) Je n’ai pas voyagé à l'étranger depuis un petit bout de temps. Mon dernier voyage remonte à celui de Chicago. J’ai écrit quelques articles à propos de mon séjour. J’ai hâte d’aller en Iceland cet été. Ça faisait longtemps que je voulais y aller.

Et oui, cette série d'interviews fait son grand retour! Nouvelle année, bonnes résolutions, donc nous voici avec la merveilleuse Rachel, du blog chicglamstyle.com.

1) How and why did you start blogging?

Blogging wasn't something that I planned. It just sorta happened. I love fashion and people always told me I have a great sense of style. So I thought why not share this with everyone?

2) What does your morning routine look like?

Morning Routine...Let's see.

A. Well, I always hit the snooze button when my alarm goes off haha! Once I get up first thing I do is check my mail on my iPad and drink a glass of cold water (it really helps to wake me up).

B. Then I make my coffee (thank you Nespresso machine!) and have my breakfast

C. I turn on my laptop, answer the most important e-mails and upload a new blog post (if I have one). At the same time I also check in on social media.

D. Once I'm done with coffee and breakfast I get dressed and go to work.

I used to work out in the mornings before breakfast but because I don't have time anymore, I do my workouts in the afternoon (there's no way in hell I'm going to wake up at 5 am to workout!).

1) Comment as-tu commencer à bloguer?

Je n'avais pas prévu de devenir blogueuse. Ça c'est simplement fait. J'adore la mode et on m'a toujours dit que j'avais un bon style. Pourquoi ne pas partager mon amour de la mode avec autrui?

2) Quelle est ta routine matinale?

A. J'appuie toujours sur la touche snooze quand mon réveil sonne. Une fois levée, je vérifie mes mails à mon iPad et je bois un grand verre d'eau froide.

B. Ensuite je me fais un café (merci Nespresso) et je prends mon petit déjeuner.

C. J'allume mon ordinateur, je réponds à quelques mails importants et je publie un article de blog. En même temps, je fais un tour sur mes réseaux sociaux.

D. Une fois que j'ai fini de petit déjeuner, je m'habille et je pars travailler. Avant, je faisais du sport le matin, mais je n'ai plus le temps, donc j'en fais l'après-midi.

3) Avocado toast or acai bowl?

Ugh! This one is tough. I frequently have both for breakfast and they are equally delicious. Can't choose a favorite so I'll go with both.

4) What has one of your family members taught you about fashion?

I think I got the fashion bug from my mother. I admire her unique sense of style. I remember when I was younger I would play dress up in her clothes and shoes. I hoped I would be as elegant as she is. Even though we have different styles, she definitely influenced me a great deal.

3) Une tartine d'avocat ou un bol d'acai?

Ah! C'est une question difficile. Je mange souvent les deux pour le petit déjeuner. Je n'arrive pas à choisir.

4) Qu'est-ce qu'un membre de ta famille t'a appris sur la mode?

Je pense que j'aime la mode grâce à ma mère. J'admire son style unique. Je me souviens, quand j'étais petite, que je piquais ses vêtements et chaussures pour me déguiser. J'aimerais être aussi élégante qu'elle. Même si nos styles sont différents, ma mère m'a beaucoup influencée.

What does a normal day look like for you?

There’s really no such thing as a “typical day.” I might scan magazines, shop and take photos, design packets, build presentations and mock-up outfits, or sit in brand design meetings. Regardless, a midday break is necessary even if it's just walking around the block! One of my favorite things is to head to Kinokuniya for a snack and some inspiration.

What does your morning routine look like?

Ideally, I wake up around 6am for a morning workout. After, I make breakfast for my husband and myself. Other days, I wake up late, shower, throw something on and run out the door as soon as possible. 

Peux-tu décrire une journée normale?

La "journée normale" n'existe pas pour moi. Par example, je consulte des magazine, assiste à des réunions, prépare des présentations... chaque jour est different. Peut importe mon travail ce jour là, j'ai besoin d'une pause l'après-midi, même si ce n'est qu'une promenade vite fait. J'adore aller au café Kinokuniya pour un goûter et pour y trouver de l'inspiration.

À quoi ressemble ta routine de soins le matin?

Idéalement, je me lève à six heures pour faire du sport. Ensuite, je prépare le petit déjeuner pour mon mari et moi. Je me lève souvent tard les autres jours et suis pressée pour assister aux réunions.

What are your fashion inspirations?

I am not a stylish person! I'm terrible at putting together outfits; I go with what is easiest - usually black and white. 

Instagram is probably my main feed of inspiration. I just love Nicole Warne and Jean (of Extra Petite.) I also adore Wendy Nguyen and Jen Tam (Her Waise Choice.) I know these are all petite Asian women, but hey, it's easy to translate for myself! I'm also a big fan of Burberry, Balenciaga, Akris, and Lanvin. 

What made you love fashion illustration?

Around the age of six or seven, I wanted to be a fashion designer. I made lots of drawings and my mom helped me make my "fashion portfolio." As a kid, I would sew clothes for Barbie and in high school I designed costumes for our school productions. But, sewing was not my strong suit. So, I chose to study illustration in college, graduated early and went to Parsons. 

I think what is so appealing about fashion illustration is that it captures the magic and the fantasy of fashion. It is whimsical and romantic. It brings out the best parts of fashion and it can be instant - no need for pattern making or production.

I fantasize about the days WWD would send artists to fashion week instead of photographers. The line and dynamism of fashion sketching is breathtaking. The greats of fashion illustration are truly underrated artists.

Qu'est-ce qui t'a fait aimer l'illustration de mode?

Je voulais être créatrice de mode vers l'âge de six ou sept ans. Je dessinais beaucoup et ma mère m'avait même aidée à faire un portfolio. Petite, je cousais des vêtements pour mes Barbies et au lycée, je créais des costumes pour les spectacles. Par contre, je n'étais pas si douée en couture. À l'université, j'ai décidé de me spécialiser en illustration de mode. J'ai reçu mon diplôme et suis ensuite partie étudier à Parsons.

Je pense que l'illustration de mode me plaît autant car ça réussit à capturer l'aspect magique de la mode. L'illustration a un côté romantique et fantaisie. L'illustration fait ressortir les meilleurs aspect de la mode et est en plus instantané - il ne faut pas faire des imprimés ni attendre pour la production. Je me souviens de l'époque quand WWD envoyait des illustrateurs aux fashion weeks, et non pas des photographs. Les lignes et le dynamisme utilisé dans l'illustration sont magnifiques. Les grands de l'illustrations sont vraiment des artistes sous-estimés. 

Qui sont tes icônes de mode?

Je ne suis pas vraiment accro à la mode. Je suis nul à trouver des looks donc la plupart du temps je m'habille en noir et en blanc.

Je suis très inspirée par Instagram. J'adore Nicole Warne et Jean (du blog Extra Petite). J'aime aussi Wendy Nguyen et Jen Tam (du blog Her Waise Choice). Ces femmes sont toutes petites et asiatique, mais j'arrive à me trouver des looks grâce à elles! Question marques, j'dore Burberry, Balenciaga, Akris et Lavin.

What’s the most important thing for a blog to catch your eye? 

Obviously, beautiful imagery. I'm a visual person so when a site has a poor design or is cluttered, I won't stick around. I'm a huge fan of (and not very good at) styling, so when I see sites with gorgeous photos I'm addicted. That's why I love Instagram so much. Even if a blogger's style doesn't match my own, if it's presented well - I'm hooked!

Comment est-ce qu'un blog réussit à te plaire?

Évidemment, de belles images. Je suis fanatique du visuel ce qui fait que ci un site n'a pas un bon design ou est trop en désordre, je n'aime pas. J'adore les photos, une autre raison pourquoi je suis fan d'Instagram. Même si le style d'un blog ne correspond pas au mien, s'il est bien mis en valeur, je suis intéressée!

Why did you start blogging?
I wanted to spread the importance of personal expression and hopefully inspire someone to not focus so much on the trends, but on yourself. And find confidence! As I'm still struggling with finding clothes I'm 100% comfortable and confident in, I thought I would take other people on the journey...and that's when my blog was born!

Pourquoi as-tu commencé à tenir un blog?

Je voulais montrer l’importance de s’exprimer à travers la mode et peut-être inspirer quelques personnes à se concentrer sur elles mêmes, et non les tendances (et avoir plus confiance en elles). Je suis toujours en train de chercher des vêtements dans lesquels je me sens 100% moi. Je pensais partager mon voyage avec d’autres et voilà comment est né mon blog !

What is your most early memory involving fashion?

I think most of us have the early memory of playing dress up! Going into my mom's walk-in closet filled with interesting clothing from the 80s and 90s was my playground.

What has one of your family members taught you about fashion?

My mom is a huge style icon of mine (hence I steal her clothes all the time). She taught me to buy clothes that will be in your closet forever. In other words, buy clothes that you feel like YOU in and can last years! I bought this tan leather jacket when I was 11 years old, and I still wear it today. I don't see it leaving my closet for the rest of my life!

Quel est ton plus ancien souvenir concernant la mode ?

Je pense que beaucoup d’entre nous nous rappelons quand on jouait à se déguiser. Le placard de ma mère, rempli de vêtements des années 80 et 90, était mon lieu favori.

Qu'est-ce qu’un des membres de ta famille t’as appris sur la mode ?

Ma mère est mon icône de mode, ce qui explique pourquoi je lui pique toutes ses affaires. Elle m’a apprise à acheter des vêtements qui dureront toute ma vie. Achète ce qui te ressemble. J’ai acheté une veste en cuir marron quand j’avais onze ans et je la porte toujours. Je ne vais jamais m’en séparer !

What is your dream piece (handbag, dress, hat etc.)?
My dream piece would have to be the most beautiful black boots in the world -- wherever they may be. Balenciaga has their famous moto cut-out boots and Saint Laurent has their famous clean-cut combat boots. If somewhere there was a mixture between the two, that would be my dream piece.

Quelle est ton article de mode de rêve ?

Ce serait une paire des plus belles bottes noires au monde, où qu’elles soient. Balenciaga est connu pour ses bottes de motocyclistes et Saint Laurent pour ses bottes de combat. S’il y avait une paire entre ces deux styles, ce serait mon article idéal.

What is a trend you dislike and why?
I can't say that there is a trend I dislike. Of course there are a lot of clothes out there that I would never wear! For example, wedge sneakers. I don't think I could ever pull them off. But, someone with a more "girly" or "sporty" personality could probably pull them off so nicely! Some trends don't work for certain people, and other trends do. I think it all depends on you!

Quelle est une tendance que tu n’aimes pas et pourquoi ?

Il n’y a pas de tendance que je n’aime pas. Évidemment, il y a beaucoup de vêtements que je ne porterais pas ! Par exemple, des baskets à semelles compensées. Elles ne m’iraient pas. Par contre, quelqu’un avec un style plutôt « fille » ou « sport » pourrait mieux les porter que moi. Certaines tendances ne vont qu’a certaines personnes. Je trouve que tout dépend de sa personnalité!
